Brazil v Germany – World Cup 2014 Semi Final
The hosts have made it into the semi of this years World Cup but it has not been easy progress for them, after topping their group they struggled to see off Chile and almost lost the match in the final minute of extra time when the chilleans hit the bar so it was a lucky escape for Brazil who went on to win on penalties. They came up against a very good Colombian side in the quarter finals but early nerves were settled with a seventh minute goal from the captain Thiago Silva and then a David Luiz thunderbolt made it 2-0 after sixty-nine minutes but a goal from the star of the tournament James Rodriguez with ten minutes to go gave Colombia some hope but they could not find the equaliser and the hosts progressed.
Germany also qualified from the group stages as group winners but have also had to fight hard to get to this stage! They met a very determined Algerian side in the first KO stage and although Germany dominated the match in terms of attempts at goals, it was not until the second minute of extra time when substitute Schurrle put them ahead and a second from Ozil in the final minute looked to have sealed the match until Djabou made it 2-1 in injury of time extra time but it all turned out too little too late and the Germans booked their place in the quarter final where they met France. Everyone was expecting a tight affair and that was what was delivered with the sides matching each other in terms of possession and shots but it was Hummels shot in the thirteenth minute which decided the game in Germany’s favour.
The sides met back in 2011 in a friendly when the Germans came out on top in a 3-2 win but the last time they met in a competitive match was back in 2005 when they met in the FIFA Confederations Cup and that time Brazil came out as 3-2 winners. Brazil will be without Neymar (Injured) and Thiago Silva (Suspended) for this match whilst Germany will be missing Mustafi (Injured) and late fitness test to a number of players suffering from flu including Per Mertesacker.

When will the match be won? 90 Minutes
Without their star player Neymar, I really feel Brazil will struggle here. They aren’t playing the typical football we come to expect from Brazil and instead are pretty machine like in how they go about their business, setting the game up to suit them and then relying on moments of individual brilliance or set pieces to score.
Brazil have had too many stars underperform so far, with the likes of Oscar, Hulk & Fred looking far from the multi-million pound players they do for their clubs. They have to step up and deliver here, but I’m struggling to see it to be honest.
They come up against a German side who aren’t going to give much away and when they were 1-0 up with half an hour to play against France, you just knew they would see the game out as they have done so many times in these big competitions.
Brazil have benefitted greatly from relatively early goals in their two knockout games and the crows has carried them greatly. I expect Germany’s game plan will be to keep Brazil quiet early on and the longer Brazil are behind or level the more nervous and emotional they’ll become I think. I’ve dutched 0-1 & 0-2 to Germany and Draw/Germany on the HT/FT result might also be a decent bet.

Neymar and Silva are big losses for Brazil, it looks like David Luiz will take over as captain for this match! I can see the hosts being frustrated by a solid German side here and the question is whether the Brazil defence will be able to contain the likes of Muller and Ozil. The betting suggests that there is not a lot between them with both pretty much priced up at the same price but I just have this sneaky feeling about Germany doing over the hosts here.
I think both teams will cancel each other out in the 90 mins and will be going for 0-0 at 8.00 but I don’t see the match going to penalties, I believe that the Germans will win in extra-time (13.00) which is not great for my overall bet of an Argentina/Brazil final but the hosts have not impressed me as much as Germany have.

Interesting that Brazil have drifted a lot since Neymar’s injury and their less than impressive performance against Colombia – it was a disappointing effort and once again showed that they are happy to kick and foul and basically do what they do often but never seem to get pulled up on.
Brazil have often been a team of mercurial talents but when you take Neymar out and then look at Hulk and Fred upfront, and then see someone like Fernandinho also throwing his (lesser) weight around, you can see that this is a team that are there for the taking – they haven’t got the speed (or skill without Neymar) and are relying on intimidation and poor refereeing. They really should have suffered against Colombia and had many more bookings and 1 or 2 sent off but they took advantage of the situation and did enough to sneak through. Rodriguez was clearly targeted for the rough treatment and unfortunately, a weak referee let the game become decided by these tactics rather than the skill of the players.
It seems a lot of people think likewise as Germany are popular picks to end the host team’s run and clinch an appearance in the final – Germany did well to stop France and if they start strongly again, they can score and put the pressure on the hosts. They are well organised and possess some very good players without any superstars but this augurs well as you usually need a strong team rather than relying on an individual.
I do think Brazil still have the ability to score with defensive players like Luiz and Marcelo always threatening, and Hulk did at least create a few chances in their last match but whether they can win, I’m not so sure. the crowd and the pressure may mean Germany stutter a bit rather than stroll, and this game could go to Extra Time but I can see them doing enough and maybe winning 2-1 eventually and stopping this reaching the penalty shootout.
My bets would be Germany to qualify (1.97), the method of victory being extra time (Germany 11.0), and a draw at 90 mins (3.25), with BTTS (2.05) and BTTS/Germany win (4.75)
