Stage 3

So stage 2 proved quite interesting a 3 men break went and threatened to win for a little while but it was a late attack that proved the key to a stage win. Then Leopold Konig went on his attack and he created a notable gap the chase was muddled and he was having some success. Then an attack came from Moreno of Katusha. Following him was Roche and Pozzovivo men with different skill sets. They caught Konig with a bit to go and then Pozzovivo attacked, Roche was patient let others work and then countered himself he made it stick and took the line solo. With it he sealed all but the overall jersey for that evening.  It has been quiet few years for him as he tends to have ambition above his ability, today was finally the day he delivered.

Nibali takes red after just two days but its unlikely Astana will be too keen to keep it for the rest of the race. 41 riders were within a minute of the winner. Coppel struggled and lost himself over two minutes. Henao Sky’s main guy lost nearly 3 minutes on a day he suffered. Igor Anton and Sanchez came in just behind him. Their were the notable losers today on what is just a taste of the test to come. 26 riders lie within a minute and race is still truly wide open.

The stage for Monday is not so testing. Its pretty pan flat and most days would be a sprinters finish, but when in Spain they stick a climb at the end. The climb comes with 4.2km to go and is under 6% on average. In fact by all accounts its simliar to today but shorter. Their may be some interesting racing including a stretch of bridge which is highly exposed and may well create havoc.

I wasn’t sure how good Ulissi’s legs would be but he looked just fine today and could well spring the surprise on Valverde with some better placement he may well do it this time around. Mollema was not far off today and he has a win on a similar finish already this season so watch out for him. Majka is not too bad on these type of finishes and really he should not be quiet as big as 100/1.

Gilbert has been carrying a bit of a sore knee and i advise anyone thinking of betting on him to perhaps think twice of doing just that.

Stage Winner:

.3pts Ulissi 12/1 betvictor

.25pts Mollema 33/1 various

.1pt Majka 100/1 bet365

3pts Gilbert not to win 1.14 pinnacle

Pozzovivo will not be so involved today while Basso seems to want be keen to keep same at the front. Majka could well get one up on Majka on this flatter finish too.

Match bets:

2pts Basso to beat Pozzovivo 7/4 ladbrokes

2pts Majka to beat Horner 2.07 pinnacle

2pts Mollema to beat Rodriguez 8/5 bet365

3pts Stybar to beat Gilbert 2.15 pinnacle
