Nearly all of Europe’s top leagues are back in action – the Bundesliga is one week away – following the winter break, dosage and as we have discovered in our Four Things there is plenty to look forward to this weekend.
Punters take note!
#1 – Liverpool and Manchester United Do Battle in One of Oldest Fixtures on Earth
These two sides have met an incredible 221 times, with the first encounter taking place more than 120 years ago!
Before punters pencil Manchester United onto their betslip without thinking they may be surprised to hear that Liverpool have beaten the Red Devils more times than they lost. They have won 70% of their most recent meetings as well (seven of ten), and with just one draw in more than 20 clashes we can presume this will produce a result one way or another.
You look at the form guide and the league table and assume that Louis Van Gaal’s side will run away with this one. But local derbies of this voracity tend to produce heightened performances from all involved, and going against conventional wisdom here is smart.
So the first of today’s football betting tips is to back Liverpool to win this match at 2.40.
#2 – How Many Will Real Madrid Put Past Beleaguered Sporting Gijon?
There was a feeling during Real Madrid’s 5-0 thumping of Deportivo last time out that Zinedine Zidane had managed to find the secret ingredient that makes his squad of world class talents tick. Whatever it is, Sporting Gijon will be in great fear.
Just take a look at Real’s record at the Bernabeu this term. They score, on average 3.4 goals per game, and we know that Cristiano Ronaldo flourishes against the weaker sides. Gijon, on the road, are conceding 1.7 goals per game on average; and we would expect that to increase somewhat come Sunday afternoon.
They have also lost their last four games, so confidence will be low. Crucially, Real Madrid have gone Over 3.5 Goals in more than half of their games (58%). This forms the basis of another of our football betting tips for today, although the price of 1.49 is rather stingy. Instead, back the Real Madrid -2.50 Asian Handicap at 1.69 or a winning goal margin of three at 1.57.
#3 – Paris Procession
A similar tale looks likely to unfold at Toulouse, who host PSG on Saturday. This is another of those meetings of contrasts, with the league leaders averaging 2.50 goals per game and notching 17 in their last six. The hosts, meanwhile, having kept a clean sheet since December 2 and have conceded in 90% of their Ligue 1 outings.
The betting tips are straightforward in this one then: Over 2.5 Goals at 1.76 looks highly backable, while the PSG 1.5 Asian Handicap is available at 2.25. And, as ever, backing Zlatan Ibrahimovic – the division’s top scorer – in the anytime goalscorer market looks smart at 2.00.
#4 – Can Udinese Halt the Juventus Charge?
Nine games, nine wins. That’s how life in Serie A is shaping up for Juventus right now, and the best bit is that they are scoring goals too: 16 in their last six games to be precise.
Udinese are this week’s opponents, and with two wins from their last three they may be fancying themselves to end the Black and Whites’ fine run.
Mind you, there is little in their stats that show they are capable. They sit 17th in the home table, with eleven points claimed from a possible 27. Home, away….it doesn’t really matter to Juve at the moment.
Critically, Udinese have lost their last two games against top six sides – 0-4 to Inter and 0-3 to Fiorentina – and so it could be the perfect ten for Juventus come the end of Sunday. At 1.67, they are the best of today’s football betting tips.
