France v Germany (17.00 GMT)
These two sides have never met in a major competition, more about they have played friendlies but never in a competitive game since the German reunification. In friendlies for recent years they met in 2012 when France ran out 2-1 and then again in 2013 when Germany were 2-1 winners! Both came through their groups fairly comfortably but both were then made to work to make it to this stage.
A couple of goals in the final ten minutes gave France a 2-0 win over Nigeria whilst the Germans were taken to extra-time by Algeria in which the Germans came out on top 2-1, rx they both played on Monday so plenty of rest time and although the Germans had to endure an extra 30 minutes the three days off should be enough for them to recover from that.
Both have been strong at the back, the French have only conceded 2 goals and the Germans 3 goals so I don’t see this being a high scoring affair, it will be a tight game with both sides passing the ball and looking for the right chance and when it comes along they better take it because there will not be many of them!
Real tough one to call, the match to go to Penalties at 11/2 and Thomas Muller anytime scorer at 15/8 are the two which interest me the most.
The Quarter-Finals have arrived and most of the big guns have made it although not as easily as some would have expected.
France and Germany progressed well through their respective groups and scored quite a few goals. However, I don’t think either are really that great a side; although they are capable of winning the trophy, they are not great sides that will linger in the memory.
France have been surprisingly tight at the back but Deschamps has got them well organised and they have the superb Lloris of course – upfront they don’t look that special although Benzema has been dangerous this tournament. They have a strong central influence and could well match the Germans today and I take them to sneak through by a goal
Germany are clearly (as usual) a decent outfit and could make me look daft but some of their team aren’t really top-notch and this may be where they get found out a bit. I expect them to be wary of the French and thus this game may take a while to get going – the Germans only beat USA by a goal and struggled to see off Algeria so the shine of their opening rout of Portugal has worn off now. They won’t give up and this could be a game that really gets going on late on
A draw at HT and perhaps a French win late on, courtesy of one of their midfielders is the call for me
Under 2.5 goals (1.7 best), HT draw (2.05 best) and France to win (3/1 best), correct score 1-0 France at 17/2 best will be my tips
