Giro Stage 8 Cycling Blog
Its the weekend and I am back in action. 186km stage with an uphill finish a walk in the park compared to the days previous endurance test on what was far too long a day. So much has happened already in the first week with the most notable the crash of Contador in stage 6. He copes on stage 7 but this Giro Stage 8 could change from being one he must conserve his losses rather than create some gains. Two huge climbs on day with both quiet apart but there will be some groups well down the road early doors.
The final climb is the key part (see profile below) 13km at 6.9%, it is flat at the bottom and at the top so really is more of a 12km climb at 7-8% expect Aru and Porte to test Contador. There are not too many teams with an interest for this stage, I am of the view the break could well go well if its big enough to share the work to the base of the final climb. Tinkoff won’t want the pace too high for most of day, while Sky are clearly saving there team for now. Astana will be the key working team and a stage win isn’t the key for them but more what they can do to Contador.
So Aru is a 5/2 favourite but not my cup of tea. Contador at 7/1 is a laughable price as he is on the back foot for sure now and looking to just cover wheels for now. Just a single bet for me in the outright stage winner with Smyzd who has been poor so far but does have the climbing legs and the ambition to go stage hunting.
