Horse Racing: Thursday 19th January – Aidenldrebin Selection

3.20 Wincanton DAWSON CITY (nap)

The selection, trained by Polly Gundry, somehow remains a maiden over fences after nine attempts, looking set to go close on just his second start over the larger obstacles at Chepstow in December 2015 when his rider was effectively knocked out of the saddle at the third last, leading at the time of departure. He was the architect of his own downfall in this very race 12 months ago, edging into the lead when crumpling on the landing side of the third last and losing momentum, also blundering over the last two fences and, despite rallying on the run-in, having to settle for second behind Golden Chieftain. He has since filled second position on four of his last five outings, chasing home the re-opposing Morney Wing in the Sussex National at Plumpton 16 days ago, sticking to the task well in the straight without ever quite getting there. This gelding is now 4lbs better off with his conqueror that day, and, for all excuses are wearing incredibly thin, he has long appealed as the type to land one of these events; with everything looking to be in his favour, he’ll struggle to break his duck over fences anytime soon if unable to land this prize.

About Author

Have been interested in horse racing since 2000, particularly the breeding side of things. Naturally, I enjoy picking apart maiden races given my love of pedigrees, but I am also at home with handicaps and Group races. Spotting potential early is very rewarding, as is picking up on a handicap project from an early stage, with my most satisfying success stories in recent years being Pere Blanc, More Of That, Turtle Watch and Arab Dawn.
