4.00 Redcar – TEODORO (nap)
The selection, trained by Tom Dascombe, is a son of Teofilo who shaped with promise in a pair of 1m maidens at Sandown and Newcastle last autumn, keeping on into fifth behind Atty Persse on debut but proving too keen when fading into the same position next time. His latest outing came in a 7f maiden at Wolverhampton seven weeks ago (4/1 chance), dropped in from his wide draw and racing enthusiastically in rear, still there as the tempo increased at the top of the straight and subjected to nothing more than a hand ride as he came home in fifth behind Giant’s Treasure (beaten 8¾ lengths). For all the step back in trip wouldn’t have been in his favour anyway, he had little chance of getting competitive given the way things unfolded, hopelessly placed in a steadily-run affair and considerately handled in the straight. He has since been gelded and will be well suited by the additional two furlongs on offer here on handicap debut, moving into this sphere from a potentially lenient mark of 69; bred to be useful and also having plenty about him physically, it’d be rather disappointing if this son of Teofilo wasn’t a lot more competitive now.
