5.10 Beverley – CONTREBASSE (nap)
The selection, trained by Tim Easterby, is a nicely-bred son of Champs Elysees who very much caught the eye on his final two starts at two, closing up late into sixth in a 1m median auction event at York last October before signing off with a sixth place finish in a similar event over 7f at Newcastle three weeks later, staying on nicely inside the final furlong for nothing more than hand riding. He made his return to action in a 10f handicap at Redcar 12 days ago (20/1 chance), settled in at the rear of the field and still going strongly with half a mile left to run, shaken up inside the three furlong marker but finding his path blocked on more than one occasion, hampered one last time at the furlong marker and finishing full of running as he came home in tenth behind Nibras Galaxy (beaten 6½ lengths). He shaped a whole lot better than his finishing position indicates, travelling like one ahead of his mark but unable to express himself fully, short of room several times and crossing the line with plenty left to give. His stable is back among the winners after a muted start to the campaign, and the additional two furlongs on offer here ought to suit; no surprise whatsoever to see this son of Champs Elysees put it all together now and belatedly get off the mark.
