Horse Racing: Tuesday 1st May – Aidenldrebin Selection

5.55 NewcastleGOWANBUSTER (nap)

The selection, trained by Susan Corbett, is a son of Bahri who caught the eye in a 7f novice race on debut here last October and duly confirmed that promise over course and distance a month later (10/1 chance), patiently ridden and travelling strongly, moving through to lead approaching the final furlong and driven out to score by 1¾ lengths from Cocktail. He returned to action in a 5f novice event here at the end of March (12/1 chance), taken back from the stalls to sit in behind the leading quartet, briefly outpaced before picking up well to launch a good-looking challenge approaching the final furlong, unable to sustain his effort and having to settle for third behind Cowboy Soldier (beaten lengths). He ultimately shaped as though fitness was the primary issue that day, though conceding upwards of 5lbs to his rivals was never going to prove an easy task (the winner has since gone close under a penalty himself whilst the runner-up went one better next time). An opening mark of 75 looks a reasonable starting point, open to improvement for the move into handicap company; entitled to strip fitter for that comeback run and with the return to six furlongs sure to suit, this son of Bahri is taken to regain the winning thread here.

About Author

Have been interested in horse racing since 2000, particularly the breeding side of things. Naturally, I enjoy picking apart maiden races given my love of pedigrees, but I am also at home with handicaps and Group races. Spotting potential early is very rewarding, as is picking up on a handicap project from an early stage, with my most satisfying success stories in recent years being Pere Blanc, More Of That, Turtle Watch and Arab Dawn.
