Il Lombardia 2014 Preview

Il Lombardia signifys the closing of the cycling season as we have the final classic of the season. “the race of the falling leaves” Il Lombardia has had many top class winners and has had some interesting parcours. This year the route is 248km with a good bit of climbing late on for the riders to test each other. The final 5km are barely flat, the final 1,5km climb has a slight ramp before it heads quickly down hill to the finish. Before that there will be quiet bit of action no doubt so the field shouldn’t be too big. The changes should limit the field a little more but don’t expect anything too far out from any of the main contenders.

il lombardia Route

Past winners have had some other major Zaugg two years ago struck his luck with a late attack sealing his victory. Rodriguez is looking to do what Cunego, Gilbert and Bettini all failed to do in the past 10 years of the race. Look at the podiums and you see a whole lot of class and talent and it should be no different now with a big win at stake. Can Rodriguez keep his form here to complete a historic treble of wins. With Valverde chasing the UCI prize for best number 1 rider of the year he is looking to finally take this in his sort history trying for this race.

Il Lombardia Past Winners

Gilbert is 3rd favourite but for me the World Champion Kwiatkowski is equally talented and a greater price. Dan Martin the 2nd in 2011 deserved better luck at the Worlds and is revving up for a late season win here. He has time and time again over the past two years shown he has what it takes to beat Rodriguez. One that interests me at bigger odds Uran who has two 3rds in this race before and some other top 10s. Interesting is how he had to come out of the Vuelta and he has more left in the tank to go well here. Last but not least in an open renewal I have gone for someone we know has made attacks stick in the past and is no doubt the team leader for Astana. Aru is sharp and a home classic would be welcome on his CV.
