Another struggling pitcher – and two in great form.
After successfully pinpointing Justin Verlanders’ woes last night, another pitcher who should be opposed starts for the San Diego Padres tonight.
Eric Stults allows just about the most home runs per start of any active pitcher and has lost his last 8 starts. Backed up by a toothless offence averaging less than 2 runs per game over the last 14 starts Eric and the Padres look to have an uphill struggle tonight.
The 8/11 (various) on offer looks to be a generous reflection of the Seattle Mariners chances – they also start a moderate pitcher in Roenis Elias, who struggled last time out against the Yankees but he is 0.31 superior in WHIP and 1.66 better on ERA than Stults and the Padres don’t have anything like the firepower of the Yankees.
Turning to 2 men on form both Yu Darvish for the Texas Rangers and Tommy Milone of the Oakland Athletics are men on red-hot streaks having each won their last 4 starts with WHIPS of 1.17 and 1.39 respectively. They are both likely to prove hard to hit and a bet on the under 7.0 total runs line at 10/11 (general) looks fair value.
Finally, what a difference a day makes in the Detroit Tigers/ Kansas City Royals series.Yesterday the Royals were great value against an out of sorts Verlander but the Tigers are a different proposition with the superb Max Scherzer starting.
Having won his last 13 home games he will provide a whole different challenge for the Royals, the limitations of whose bullpen was exposed by conceding 6 runs at the bottom of the 9th last night.
The 4/6 for the Tigers looks too short to play at the outset but this match may present a BIR opportunity if Kansas take an early lead in that their bullpen is moderate and the Tigers have come from behind to win in a record 20 games this season.
Thus, if the Tigers trade over 6/4 in running at any stage this should be taken up to the 7th inning.
