Before we move on, let’s take one last look back at everything that went down at Thunder Valley.
Nine days ago, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series made its second of two stops at the East Tennessee bullring known as Bristol Motor Speedway. After 500 laps, Joey Logano found himself in victory lane celebrating his third win of the 2015 season. Kevin Harvick finished second for the tenth time this season. Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five.
Overall, it was about average for a Bristol race. There was never really a dull moment with action all over the track, but not a race that, 20 years from now, I’ll look back and say “what a race that 2015 Irwin Tools Night Race was.”
What stood out to me was the last 50 laps. It was quite a sight to see Kevin Harvick reel in Joey Logano and pressure him for 50 laps around the world’s largest amphitheater. In the end, it was the driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford that reigned supreme.
So this week, NASCAR revives a grand tradition on Labor Day Sunday night with the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. This is one of NASCAR’s crown jewel events and it’s back in its rightful place on the calendar after spending the last 13 years usually on Mother’s Day weekend.
