Tour of Oman 2015 Cycling Preview

The climbers race of the middle east Tour of Oman gets under way on Tuesday and while the lack of live tv coverage is always a draw back its terrain makes for interesting racing. Stage 4 has the usual Green Mountain finish while Stage 5 has a hill on its finishing laps. The climbs are hard enough to blow it apart but it will likely come down to brave attack that sticks or a good sprint.

With two stages to break things up it does complicate the race a little and winning on Green Mountain might not be enough. After a tricky 2014 and with riders holding it back a little longer than past seasons there will be no certainity in the performance of some of this field.

Valverde, Rodriguez and Nibali are the top 3 in the market and I am avoiding all three. Both Nibali and Rodriguez look like they will be holding back a little. Valverde carried a little illness amd while he is sharp with victories already this season he is beatable.

Leopold Konig comes in ready to go with top 5s in both his races in the season warm ups. He comes with the hunger in his first year at Sky and he has won against quality fields on his best days so can do so here. TVG has previous here and loves week long racing but with reports of Majka flying he also tempts both at a touch of double figures. Pinot also comes in tuned up and its interesting see how he puts up here.

Arredondo is the best climber but a dnf in Colombia means he likely won’t match the best on these smaller climbs. Barguil opens his season with Alpecin but how fit will he be, they also have young talent Carter Jones lining up here. Worth noting both Cofidis and Etixx seem to have gone with focus on sprint trains and not the hills. Strangely Rui Costa comes here over his home race the field is surely too strong for him to put his stamp on the race. Watch Meintjes for MTN he comes in with a good start to the season in lesser races and he has big upside. Frank leads IAM only 36th in this last year he should surely improve. Blythe and Bennett are two other notable teams with a team built to focus on stage hunting.

The 16/1 with skybet tempts me enough to side a stake on Majka. With Konig filling the Froome role I really have faith that the rider we saw last season will only get better. Pinot has an outside chance but is by far the best value in his price range.

  1. Stage 1:

So many in with hopes I like Bouhanni, Bennett and Guardini but its hard to spilt any of them so little bigger I can get Arndt.

    .25pts N.Arndt 20/1 ladbrokes

1pt Boonen to beat Van Poppel 1.61 pinnacle

  2. Stage 2:
Not sure how to play this the shorties are just so playing three outsiders that can sprint but deal with the tricky finish. All Italian as it happens.
    .2pts Colbrelli 25/1 ladbrokes
    .1pt Battaglin 66/1 bet365
    .1pt Pozzatto 66/1 bet365

3pts Colbrelli to beat Rojas gils 2.42 pinnacle
2.2pts Majka to beat Barguil 2.43 pinnacle

  3. Stage 3:

A surprise to see Cancellara winning a stage again and while we have to wait it seemed a chaotic day out on the road. Looking at the photo I am not sure how there wasn’t a gap from Sagan to 6th place. Majka is truely up there for us but Pinot and Konig won’t be winning. Only 20 riders got within 40 seconds, which is sizeable gap that I doubt the winner wasn’t in that top 20 today.

Stage 3 is really set up for a good strong sprinter.

    Stage Winner:

    .25pt TOm Boonen 16/1 skybet
    .25pt Arnaud Demare 14/1 ladbroke

    Stage match bet:

    1.5pts Demrare to beat Bennett 5/6 bet365
1pt Colbrelli to beat Rojas Gil 3.03 pinnacle

  4. Stage 4:

Mixed bag as it went just the way the market predicted in the end and we had little profit on the match bet front. Its the key green mountain stage. The climb isnt overly long at over 5km but it hits 13% for good part of 2nd half.

Majka our bet for outright can come good here so I am not sure betting on stage win is that worthwhile. Hes 4/1 to win the overall (7/2 for stage) I don’t see much point going anywhere else. TVG is worth look for BMC and he knows the climb

    Stage winner:

    .3pts Van Garderen

    2pts Fugslang to beat Meintjes 5/6 bet365
2pts Barguil to beat Rui Costa 5/6 bet365

  5. Stage 5:
So Majka was not as strong as he might have thought and Van Garderen our stage win bet (14/1 price was not quoted) found one to good in surprise winner Valls. Valls had not had a win in stage etc since 2010. Anyway Valls leads but Valverde and TVG are threats to him. For this stage they take on 4 hill repeats. The climb isn’t always same each time but it would seem to be enough to shed any weak riders. Two small bets for me as it looks a tricky one to judge

    Stage 5 Bets:
    .1pt Van Garderen 15/1 bet365
    .1pt Rui Costa 40/1 skybet

4pts Greg Van Avermaet to beat Boassen Hagen 1.74 pinnacle
1pt Moreno to beat Arredondo 1.97 pinnacle
2pts TVG to beat Majka 1.81 pinnacle

  6. Stage 6:

So we are into the last day, stage 5 wasn’t to bet a pity as the GVA bet looked strong. VALL backers will be smiling as the day off meant he had no chance to lose his leaders jersey. Not trusting Guardini here and think Pellucchi offers the best threat to Kristoff.

    .4pts Pellucchi 8/1 ladbrokes
