Valspar Championship – Hofmans Golf Picks
Last week was exciting at Doral as a viewing spectacle, what an amazing course they have turned it into, no player is safe and it claimed any of our chances who failed to keep steady over the four days. Onwards and upwards to the Valspar Championship this week for the PGA Tour. Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club hosts the renamed Valspar Championship and lets hope its near as exciting as last week.
Since 2007, this event was moved to this time of year from its old Autumn spot. This course will be another tester, quick greens, dog legs, and tight landing areas as well as plenty trees to punish wayward shoots. getting into double figures and shootings 60s should very much put a player in the reckoning on this par 71 course.
Hitting greens and putting well will be a huge help for this week. As mentioned, accuracy off the tee is important given the lay out so being big hitter won’t be the deciding factor. Like last week, the wind can blow up so look at players who will handle that well and as such past course former is useful. Steve Rawling offered some excellent form pointing out how strong getting the final 3 holes played bogey free can be to a golfers chances.
Speith heads the market but last week he did not play to his best ability and I will likely look to lay to win and even in the top 5 market. Both Rose and Dufner gave many reasons not to back when Donald is the same price to back.KJ Choi plays with a Masters place on his mind
Valspar Championship Picks:
Luke Donald 22/1 boylesports- Starting to turn it on and will really enjoy this track. Won this in 2012 and one bad round hurt him at Doral. 4th last year when defending. Could be his key showing before the masters.
Gary Woodland 40/1 coral – A winner 3 years ago. he is both long and accurate off the tee so should be rewarded here. 20th last week reasonable on course that doesn’t suit.
Kj Choi 50/1 various- Two time winner from 02 and 06 here. 12th on his last start shows some good heart. Playing with a Masters place at stake as currently won’t get in.
Jonas Blixt 80/1 Betfair Fixed (6places) – Played some excellent golf at times last week when many others faltered. Has won twice on tour before and is a Florida based player. So a small 6th bet this week.
Russell Knox 66/1 various- Lost in play off at the Honda Classic, hits plenty greens to give himself a good chance. Lives Local as well and in right sort of form.
Charles Howell III 66/1 paddy power – Has strong form lines from his performances at the Sony Open, and one of best GIR stats on tour so surprise such a long price.
Valspar championship starts Thursday.
