Last years favourite eventually didn’t run due to injury, a return over hurdles in December at Limerick was a winning one, and back to fences in the Bobbyjo at Fairyhouse he finished runner up to Roi Du Mee and in front of Seabass and Rare Bob. He has won on soft and heavy ground in the past so if does come up slow he should be OK. Two wins over 3miles or further is good for the stats, but the defeat in the BobbyJo would just give me slight Stamina concerns for this event

ON HIS OWN
W P Mullins
9   11-00
148

A faller at Bechers Brook last year he has been seen just once since over hurdles at Navan winning at surprisingly big odds. The hurdle outing served probably double purpose. Firstly a confidence builder in race conditions after last years fall and to protect his mark coming into the Grand National. Mullins has a strong hand again this year and On His Own is part of the armoury. 7 chase runs to date and 3 wins at 3 miles or further. Only doubt would be experience, remember the 10 chase runs trend!

SEABASS
173
T M Walsh
10   11-6
154

Seabass has yet to get that all important win over three miles in a chase in the form book (under rules, he has point to point form over the trip). Behind prince De Beauchene last time out he comes here with trends against him a but third place finish in the race in 2012. On that basis alone he commands some respect but the handicapper has him five pounds higher in the race this year which could be his undoing

JOIN TOGETHER
170
Paul Nicholls
8   11-2
150

Paul Nicholls Join Together may be an 8yo and a little light on experience, but he has a host of good wins in the formbook, experience over these fences with a neck defeat to Hello Bud on the Becher Chase and possession of a third place finish in the Mildmay last April. The handicapper does;t seem to have over-reacted, his mark looks fair but will this come 12 months too early?

COLBERT STATION
164
T M Walsh
9   11-1
149

In addition to Seabass, Ted Walsh who last won this race in 2000 will have Colbert Station as a representative. There would have been a few happy punters when winning the Paddy power Chase at Leopardstown just after Christmas. An almighty gamble saw his price crash to 5/1 favouritism and he didn’t disappoint running out a comfortable winner on the day. Seen juts once since in a Pertempts Hurdle qualifier in heavy ground, he won under Tony McCoy and looks set to give a good show at Aintree

CAPPA BLEU

Evan Williams
11   10-11
145

Evan Williams runner has been seen twice since finishing seventh in the grand national in 2012. He would have represented a good number of the trends last season and can do again this year. he has had two outings this season but with a couple of runner up spots,Paul Maloney didn’t ask for too much, this being the seasonal target, he arrives 2lbs lower than 2012 and has to enter calculations. The owners have now been placed four times in this race having ownership of State Of Play, (3rd three times), will 2012 give them their first win?

SUNNYHILLBOY
171
Jonjo O´Neill
10   11-4
152

If Sunnyhillboy doesn’t win the grand national this season he wont go any closer to doing so than he did last year when fighting out one of the best finishes of the race in recent time to be defeated just by a nose by Neptune Collonges. He was scratched from the Gold Cup at Cheltenham this year in a late decision which allowed Tony McCoy to ride Sir Des Champs. McCoy swerved Sunnyhillboy in last seasons race to stick with Gold Cup winner and ill fated Synchronised. Will he ride this time round? He is ten pounds higher this year on 152, possibly too much?

Rebecca Curtis
9   11-3
151

An excellent winner of the “4 Miler”at the Cheltenham Festival 2012, he finished a respectable 6th in the Hennessey and an even better runner up behind Monbeg Dude in the Coral Welsh national. Some may question his experience, but with wins over as far as four miles and such a talent for clean jumping, whilst his no show in the trial at Haydock could be of some worry, as the ground should not have caused too many problems, I feel he could be primed for this race and the extreme distance is just what he wants

CHICAGO GREY
178
Gordon Elliott
10   10-7
141

Gordon Elliot won this race before he had even held a trainers licence for a full 12 months in 2007 with Silver Birch. Chicago Grey will represent in 2013 and what of his chance?Well, no one was really expecting him to have the speed to score over 2 miles  4 furlongs at Navan in February but score he did in fine style, He comes into the race on a nice mark of 143 and is another to enter calculations. Brought down early on in the race last year, it will be interesting to see if Paul Carberry rides him again

WYCK HILL
170
David Bridgwater
9   10-8
142

Wyck Hill has had seven outings over fences thus far in his career, which doesn’t quite make up to the ten for trends followers, but wins over at least 3 miles, and a weight of 10-08 with a 142 rating keeps him in on some. David Bridgewaters 9yo has had three outings this season, last seen at Kempton when simply not showing up in the toughest company he has faced to date. That cost him an appearance at Cheltenham and this will surely be too tough

IMPERIAL COMMANDER
167
Nigel Twiston-Davies
12   11-10
158

Former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, (2010), has not been seen since January when putting in a terrific comeback in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham going down by minimal margins from Cape Tribulation who managed a 5th in the Gold Cup in March. Imperial Commander was withdrawn from Cheltenham following the health issues at Nigel Twiston-Davies stable. He is rated 160 and that would make this the biggest challenge of them all

WHAT A FRIEND
162
Paul Nicholls
10   11-9
157

Will be carrying 11-9 now for the race and that it right up at the top end of the weights. The stats then are against him although we have seen the better runners dominating in recent renewals. Winner of the Bowl Chase in 2010, he finished just seventh in the race last year and in between time, failed to finish in the 2010 Grand National when pulling up.

BIG FELLA THANKS

Tom George
11   11-6
154

Has already run in the Grand National when trained by Paul Nichols and Ferdy Murphy. He has moved on again since 2011 and is now with Tom George. This season he has arguably put in some of his best career performances although the last twice, a win at Wincanton and a runner up spot in a Grade 3 at Newbury last time have come around 2m 4f.  Finished 6th, 4th and 7th in previous Nationals, punters should get at very least a good run.

ROBERTO GOLDBACK

Nicky Henderson
11   11-6
154

Has been busy for Nicky Henderson this winter, unseating his jockey in the Hennessey at Newbury he has raced three times since. Well beaten before Christmas at Ascot, he was equally well beaten at Sandown in the BetFred Master Handicap Chase. Both events came on the all too frequent heavy ground we saw over winter, and his latest outing at Kempton on better ground. He was purchased and moved from Dessie Hughes with this race in mind but being penalised 12lbs for his win at Ascot and going up to 162, that could have been too high a mark, he is back to 152 with those poor runs in the heavy conditions but 4 career falls and one this term would be a worry.

BALLABRIGGS
175
Donald McCain
12   11-4
152

Ballabriggs would have to become the first 12 year old since Amberleigh House in 2004 to win the Grand National. By a quirk, Ballabriggs is of course trained by Donald McCain Jnr, whilst Amberleigh House was trained by his father who also trained Red Rum to a Third Grand National win at the age of 12. So whilst the 9 12yo winners in 53 years is a negative trends, the McCains and 12yos is a positive one. Winner in 2011, he can not be dismissed

BESHABAR
Tim Vaughan
11   10-9
143

Beshabar was a novice winner of the Scottish Grand national and waves were made when he did so. Whilst his lack of experience from the trends angle with less than 10 outingsover fences in the form book, he he has previously shown the tenacity to win from the front at Ayr in a Grand National, the only negative I can find in this regard is no previous experience over the Aintree national fences. Another concern however has to be his lack of outings. If he takes his place in the line up he would have been off the track for just about 500 days!

QUEL ESPRIT
168
W P Mullins
9   11-7
155

After some abject jumping displays in his early career he made amends by winning the Hennessey Gold Cup at Leopardstown beating Roberto Goldback into the bargain. Over these fences at Aintree his jumping will be put to the sternest test. Willie Mullins runner hits a number of trends but there would have to be some concerns about his ability over these fences on this course over this trip

ACROSS THE BAY
176
Donald McCain
9   11-2
150

Across the Bay is another McCain representative. A high profile hurdler his mark over fences is higher than one might expect it to be based on the value of races he has won. Well beaten in the Welsh National he has had one outing over hurdles since. On bare form it would seem he has a considerable amount of improvement required to be getting involved at Aintree

TOFINO BAY

D T Hughes
10   11-1
149

Dessie Huges charge now has some good looking form in the book and has demonstrated his ability to stay in going down just half a length to the very well fancied good things Back IN Focus in the “4 Miler” at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Whether this race comes too soon after that effort or not will remain to be seen, certainly it would be the opinion of many that it would be.

Thomas Gibney
11   10-13
147

Don’t let long odds put you off this runner from an unfashionable yard. He was on a run of improvement when he scored at a huge 50/1 in Navan around this time last year. Raised an amazing 27lbs in the handicap for that win, punter considered it too much and let him go off at 33/1 odds at Fairyhouse in April. He defied the rise in running out a comfortable winner again! Up another 13lbs he didnt make it round the Hennessey at Newbury, but can he land at big odds at Aintree?

BALTHAZAR KING
169
Philip Hobbs
9   10-12
146

Balthazar King could see a good amount of support for this race as punter who were looking to bet him to repeat his Cheltenham Festival Cross Country win of 2012 this year were denied the chance by both the weather and a change of day. An excellent jumper with tons of stamina. if the ground is good on Grand National day, he could turn out very well handicapped

HARRY THE VIKING
149
Paul Nicholls
8   10-6
140

Harry the Viking could be a second representative for Alex Ferguson if he and What A Friend run. Owned in partnership with Ronnie Wood of Rolling Stones fame and trained by Paul Nicholls he was well down the field in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham. In 2012 however he ran into second spot behind Teaforthree in the National Hunt Chase Challenge over 4 miles so has shown some high form over extreme distances. His form this year though will not give punters huge amounts of confidence

WEIRD AL
176
Donald McCain
10   11-8
156

Another McCain runner, surely rated 156 and carrying 11-8 now will have done for his chances. His rating leaves him very difficult to place in races and McCain must be very frustrated at his opportunities, or lack thereof. His rating at the top of the weights here does not bode well for his chance and he is easily opposed

JONCOL

Paul Nolan
10   10-13
147

Joncol remains in the race and in the betting but I should still remain very surprised if he turns up. He has been entered for so many races in Britain over the years and for one reason or another never arrived. It is a shame as he was/is a sublime talent who could have been enjoyed by more people, but Paul Nolan needs things to fall right for him, an I think it is unlikely we will see him in the race

Bostons Angel is an interesting out and out stayer who has run most frequently in the cross country chases at Cheltenham and Punchestown of late. Fourth in the latest Cheltenham Event at the festival Outlaw Pete was in front in third, and was his victor in December at the same track.

OSCAR TIME

M M Lynch
12   10-11
145

Oscar Time was quite well fancied in 2011 for this race and finished runner up to Ballabriggs but arrives in 2013 as a 12yo. A stat as we have seen, that is not the strongest for the race. For all age stats click here. After injury he missed a good period of time and it could be argued that since his return he has not been running to the same level as previously, four runs this winter would attest to that although it would be interesting to see him out on genuinely good ground again!

Always Waining is in the race and in the betting but most likely to be going for a record fourth consecutive win in the Topham Chase at the meeting. If,However, He does get switched to the national, despite his 12yo status,he would be very interesting off a very winnable mark

TREACLE
T J Taaffe
12   10-9
143

Tom Taafes Treacle takes tilt number two at Aintree. Oh you can imagine the headlines if he wins. A faller at the tenth fence in last years race he has raced a couple of times this year and looks in around the same form coming into the race but his Betfair odds of 66/1 would also look to be about right

SAINT ARE
172
Tim Vaughan
7   10-8
142

Saint Are would have to break a 73 year old record to win the Grand National as no 7 yo has done so since Bogskar in 1940, although few have tried. Disappointing in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham

QUISCOVER FONTAINE
151
W P Mullins
9   10-7
141

Entered for the race last season, the Irish National was eventually preferred and the same fate could out this season although he has been racing only over hurdles suggesting that connections may consider his chase mark handy. With that consideration and the fact he has seen these fences previously a plus,it may be negated by no win over 3 miles in a chase previously. The latter a strong trends to overcome

BACKSTAGE
Gordon Elliott
11   9-12
132

Was brought down in the 2010 race and finished 10th in 2011. Pulled up twice under rules since, including in the Foxhunters at the Cheltenham Festival his point to point record in between is very impressive. An interesting entry for Gordon Elliot, but with two previous failed attempts there will be few rushing out to go mad for him in 2013

FORPADYDEPLASTERER
167
Thomas Cooper
11   11-0
148

Is an interesting entry given his life time form and recent runs. After winning with some style at Thurles over 3 miles, (by far from his best ever performance), he has dropped back to shorter trip and most latterly run over hurdles. Not an un-typical preperation and he could turn out a dark horse, but any best would be very speculative

The highest mark he has won off previously was 134, finished 10th in the race last year at 100/1 and beat only one home in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham most recently. The Pipes can plot a handicap horse, of that there is no doubt, but this one would be bigger than the Gun Powder plot!

Has completed these fences on more than one occasions but brought down in the 2012 race. Only two and half lengths down on Seabass in the BobbyJo at Fairyhouse in February he is weighted to reverse that form, but will want some cut in the ground to be seen at his best
