Conditional Jockeys Hurdle 2014

Paul Nicholls celebrated success in the Conditional Jockeys Hurdle last year with Salubrious.

Conditional Jockeys Hurdle 2014

This race is named after the Champion Trainer Martin Pipe, a fifteen times champion trainer who record thirty-four Cheltenham festival winners. The race is for conditional jockeys who will contend with nine hurdles during the extended two miles and four furlongs trip. Only established back in 2009 there has been no multiple winners of the race.

Conditional Jockeys Hurdle 2014 – Trends

Given that the race was only established in 2009 that gives us just five race worth of data which is not enough to consider trends.

Zipster – Thomas Crapper

Shantou Magic has won a couple of class four hurdles and was not disgraced in the Challow Hurdle after a jump in class and then on handicap debut (138) he was some fourteen lengths off the winner, his last two starts have both been on heavy ground and the better ground today is sure to suit him better. Leo Luna is also a dual class four hurdle winner and put in a couple of good runs on good ground last year, handicap debut last time out off 135 which he goes off again today, he was third and some fifteen lengths off Kaylif Aramis. The final runner on my list is Thomas Crapper, he is a four time winner over hurdles, has won a couple of class three handicaps here at Cheltenham off 122 and 128, comes here today off 134 so not too far up on his latest win, outclassed last time out in graded company.

Leo Luna sole run at Cheltenham would be a concern whilst Shantou Magic probably needs to come down slightly in the handicaps which means I am going to go with dual course winner Thomas Crapper here today who with an 8lb claimer in theory puts him off 126 which is 2lbs lower than his last win.

gghofman – Caid Du Berlais, Vieux Lion Rouge & Thomas Crapper (EW)

A tricky race at times with mix of jockey levels. Full Shift is Henderson charge but he has not yet had a run in something to compare to this. Vieux Lion Rouge is Pipes target horse for a race the yard will always be interested in. Was midfield in bumper here but that’s nice race and won his assignments since in good style. Caid Du Berlias has useful jockey Derham on him and was 2nd last year in the Fred Winter which shows travelling further will really suit him. Had bad go at chasing so quickly reverted back to hurdles.

Each way value is in Thomas Crapper in this one. He has won twice this season here but was let down with his 8th over 3miles so stepping back today will suit. Better grand key to his best runs too.

SeamusShanley – Full Shift, The Skyfarmer (Saver)

I am very keen on the Henderson selection to go well here and if Bobs Worth does the business in the Gold Cup I would expect the price to fall on this runner who landed a big gamble in Newcastle beating Clever Cookie on his maiden appearance. Clever Cookie has gone on to win a grade 2 noves hurdle since so that form has been franked very well and with the up and coming Nico De Boinville on board, this horse should get very close.

My saver selection did not take to the heavy conditions in Ascot but has beaten Lyvius over the course drawing clear to win on that day. He has proven he will handle the conditions and so can go well at a price.

Darylrogerson – The Skyfarmer

Only a winner of 4 of his 7 career starts and all three of his losses have come when encountering softer ground. A striking winner on penultimate start when finishing strongly ahead of Lyvius who now races off 12lbs higher. Clearly well thought of and James Best has a great strike rate for the yard so it’s foolish to dismiss this ones chances here today.

Jaydubs – Caid Du Berlais

Nicholl’s horse arrives just 6lb’s higher than when 2nd to the impressive Flaxen Flare last year in the Fred Winter with Harry Derham retaining the festival ride. It has just 2 chasing efforts this season on top of the singel hurdle race, winning one while last behind Valdez, Arnaud and Fox Appeal at Doncaster lto. The run that interests though is the hurdle when it ran Champion Hurdle Jezki close after travelling across to Down Royal for the WKD hurdle, beating Flaxen Flare in the process. This indicates to me its held in high regard and I think it could be a few lbs ahead of the real rating here.

Conditional Jockeys Hurdle 2014 – SBB Recommends: Caid Du Berlais (1pt Win)
