DP World Tour Championship > the end of the road…

3

DP World Tour Championship, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai, Nov 22nd-25th, 2012

A little bit of an anti-climax this week with this tournament being the finale of the European Tour season but with Rory McIlroy already having won the Race To Dubai then it has a slight feeling of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ this week
There are plenty of players who can win the huge purse and many who can propel themselves into the top 10 and collect a handy payout from the ‘pool’ of funds allocated to the rankings after this

We also have winners from all over the globe last week with Donald, Jimenez and Stenson all victorious and Poulter who was 2nd in Australia having won recently in China; Manassero, Hanson are recent winners also and Grace who has won 4 times this year on this tour also feature

The market has unattractive short prices about Rory, Donald and Oosthuizen at 7.5, 11 and 11.5 respectively on Betfair

More interesting prices can be found on the following and these are where my dollars will be going this week:

Stenson > been a long hard road for a few years now and plenty of false dawns but Stenson is a class player and more than capable of following last week’s good win in South Africa with another stellar effort here in Dubai, will be looking to pick up his 8th Tour win – 23 on betfair

Colsaerts > matured well this year and has played great golf – won the Volvo Matchplay in Spain in May and was terrific in the Ryder Cup showing he has the head for the big occasion – more than capable of taking this course apart and could cap a splendid year with a big win here > 36 on betfair

Alex Noren – another hit or miss player but a great talent and again with his length and ability to shoot very low is one who could make a mockery of the 7600 yard course > 67 on betfair is decent and with a 3rd and 6th in his last 3 tourneys the 3 time tour winner is in good shape

Chris Wood > 120 on betfair is a decent price for another player who has the potential; this may be a big event and possibly too big but he is in good nick with 15th, 7th and 10th his last 3 finishes

Trading > Romain Wattel and Joost Luiten at around 350 are attractive and could be worth backing with a view to lay off once they start well

  1. A battle between Donald and McIlroy it would seem at the halfway stage although our tips, Stenson and Colsaerts are just 3 shots back at -8

Wood -4 and Noren at -1 are too far back to win this now but the 2 trades, Wattel and Luiten are still in there at -7 and -6 respectively

  2. Stenson up to -11 after the 3rd round but with Donald and Rory pulling away there has been no chance to trade…

Luiten and Wattel have proven to be terrific trading selections being as they are currently 5th and 7th; Luiten dropped to 75 at best and Wattel 110 or so but picking the right time to lay is always tricky… they would have been much lower prices if others had been leading (ie not Donald, McIlroy, Schwartzel, Oosty etc)

  3. plenty of birdies ont he last day and a great effort by Rose who shot a 62 but McIlroy was on song and clinched the title well

Stenson did well and finished 6th and both Luiten and Wattel featured well but didn’t make up any ground on the final day; a reasonable effort though and there wasn’t much point backing Donald or Rory at their prohibitive odds
