Hofmans golf picks – The Open 16th July

I got a small each way return with Laird last week and had 3 of my picks hit the lead at some stage but it didn’t come down to a winner in the end. We hit the 3rd Major of the season now and a repeat of Jason Day(2nd Masters) or Justin Rose (winner of US Open) would be more than welcome in my view.

The wind won’t be too strong this week but look for strong shot-makers and scramblers.

The Open:

Final List:

Chris Wood 140/1 bet365 (7places)

Brandt Snedeker 40/1 various (7places)

Branden Grace 66/1 various (7 places)

Matt Kuchar 45/1 various (7places)

Bill Haas 90/1 various (7places)

Short List:

A.Noren – three times winner on European tour, 9th last yr in open, 5 top 10s this season

M.Manassero – has shown liking for links golf, good ball striker,

Miguel Angel Jimenez – coming in top a bit of form, decent open record also of late

Matt Kuchar – 2 pga tour titles this yr, has game to prove himself on this course. best finish of 9th came last yr. knocking on the door of major win with Matchplay and Player’s wins.

Ernie Els – loves the event winner just 2 weeks ago, won at course last time too.

Chris Wood – seems be a wind specialist, mentioned by many as lively outsider who isn’t fearful of bigger names

Bill Haas – talked up in many circles,  2013 winner on PGA tour and gone close on other occasions.  Like Kuchar he can have a game to play this links course.

Webb Simpson – has top 20 only go at The Open, excellent wedge player and previous major winner too.

Henrik Stenson – led for long time in Scotland ,playing well with strong season and shown liking for links golf.

Branden Grace- great wind player,  3 European tour wins on link courses. Said to be a momentum player so right time back him and one of best men on his bag in Foster.

Mikko Ilonen – coming good on tour this year and likes links golf.

S.Garcia – won as amateur here,  has been in contention a few times having good season so far and having one of his best years with the putter.

Dustin Johnson – warmed up playing some European events, plays Pebble Beach well

Martin Kaymer – shown links form , putter coming on, looked good for while at Munich open.

Jamie Donaldson – showing some good form and won on tour this year,  7th major app and made wise call to not play Scottish open.

Michael Thompson – winner on US tour this season, 2nd open app,

Graeme De Laet – the Canadian is doing well on the PGA tour this season,  considering one of best ball strikers in PGA,  no tour win but had good showing on links before.

Brandt Snedeker – has been positive about his liking of this course, and way he plays could well suit the course. If finally at his best a player of top quality who deserves a major?

Graeme McDowell –  Open best last season previous major winner has class to win and cope with with links if right Graeme turns up
