Horse Racing – Ballybrit Galway Festival 2013 – Day 1 Picks and Tips

5.10 – King of the Picts 6/1

Zabana a top weight faces stern task here even with the good run o form, clinic diplomat is a nice horse and has course win, but king of picts win at bellewstown really takes my eye. The market looks pretty spot on but it has priced the 3 main threats to the favourite big enough. King of picts is the stand out of these. Had 3 of today in behind him on last run.

5.40 – Whatever it Takes 20/1 , Carlowsantana 20/1,

Anshan dreams interesting on course win but he carries plenty weight for horse with up down record. Don’t tell Pa comes off a break after finally running into a wall with weight hike. Hurricane ridge needs a step up running well on flat but jump form needs picking up. Regusci is the usual Martin lightweight but he looks unlikely to get in now.

Usa is up the higher end of the weights and not a natural for this course from his 3 runs here. Better prices to be had. Alladins cave worth taking on also a favourite but this race looks one to take the better prices at. Wither Hills last race working out well from Bellewstown but i am still unsure. Foot soldier is light but softish ground may not be up his street.

Whatever it takes looks best at 2 miles so going to this trip will suit. He ran pretty well last time at 2m 4f course should suit him and at 2miles that should see him at his best. Carlowsantana, won 2 of his 5 starts coming into this.  Key is that softish ground was on cards for those wins, 2nd at this festival last year a good pointer.

6.10 – Sniper 13/2

Normally like taking on O’Briens one in this as they don’t always come out firing. Sniper should have second run but this turns out to be the one. Mustajeeb is odds on but from the powerful Weld yard who has taken 5 of last 7 of these but the value perhaps lies in Sniper for Lyons who doesn’t do badly in Galway himself.

6.45 – Domination 12/1 (5 Places),  Cry for the Moon 12/1 (5 places)

Shadow eile must now find 2miles as being going at lesser trips. Notable graduate is from the well know Weld Yard but needs hope heard gear does a lot for him here. Mullins digenta is interesting . With limited amount of runs top weight however off the 12 stone and the fact runs have been on quicker ground. On better ground Marchese Marconi was held by digenta he may come closer now on these terms. Redera was interesting  but runs don’t suggest Galway is his course with the ground getting softer.

Domination won a cesarewitch trial. Good win at curragh in 17 runner event last time Has 2nd at festival last year on similar ground to today.  Cry for the Moon is 1lb less here now compared to the second when unlucky in running last season. Iffy last two runs need to be over come however Galway would have always been the target.  Knockcroghery usually does well around August but comes in already nicely peaked.

7.15 – Doc Holiday 7/1 e/w, Cest ma Souer 16/1

Strapless season debut looked weakfish as head gear did not seem to have desired effect. Campestral scene steps up in this now and disappointing favourite last time. Target acquired has gone up weights and also has lack of a run to prove he will handle the galway finish. Off a lighter weight is Doc Holiday, off lesser weight not much like last season but recent seasonal debut looked pretty good and potential on just 5th run.  Bellewstown 3rd of Cest ma Souer caught my eye track overlaps form with Galway a lot.  Poor draw but rain will do good for chances.

7.45 – Pay Day Kitten 9/4 NAP , Waver 20/1

Interesting to see a 1m 4f handicap in Ireland with such a select field. It’s the top 3 in the weights that caught my eye. Waver is such huge price he is worth leaving in as a small bet, step down 2 furlongs should be good help. The weld horse of pay day kitten is closely matched with great explorer but the soft ground form is more encouraging really as is the trainers record here compared to Obrien. Notable that market was not confident at naas yet he pulled it out.
