One each way 2nd and lots of other seconds at Galway so far usually one I have always done well on but I will keep trying to pick it up and all it takes is 2 or 3 winners to get you back on track. Funny thing is I have done pretty well trading some of my picks on exchanges.
Galway Day 3
Pumbaa 12/1, Scienter 20/1,
A 2mile maiden hurdle to get us off so one to have a limited interest in. The standard is quiet high for this with some interesting bumper types trying to shed their maiden tag here.
Blackmail is the interesting favourite for AJ Martin, he won what has turned out a strong bumper in January. Wasn’t quiet up to standard then going to Cheltenham before a solid 4th at punchestown and a 2nd to a stable mate at bellewstown which should ensure Galway suits. But at odds on I think to take him on with two long shoots. Pumbaa is a new start for J Mangen, the horse has some nice bumper form winning on debut and then 3rd in a strong bumper there after. A good 2nd on debut but needs show he will handle the hill but worth risking he will at the odds been offered.
Roe Deer had a flat win but looked like this might be too much based on latest hurdles run. Scienter is interesting one he had his debut at this course an unimpressive 6th. However he progressed and then won his second bumper run. He is thrown in on his first hurdles run here but again at the price he is well worth keeping onside. Some Article is a nice bumper winner on debut but that was back in April 2012, run out last time and not seen since and would prefer others. Tisamystery has been doing plenty in points . Two race track runs have been mixed and while good that he liked bellewstown hard to know what the second their is worth.
Six Stone Ned 13/2, Courtncatcher 14/1
A 2mile 4f handicap hurdle and a big field at that so always hard to make a decisive pick for this. Win of Banana Flambe in his maiden was weakish and he will face it bit stiff of this mark. Bumper form also did not look very impressive. Point the Toes has some pretty interesting form but his style of racing might catch him out in this large field at this Galway track. Treat yourself has not run too much of late, both wins his mark took a hit for were over 2miles, and that may be his better trip for Galway.
King High has the cheek pieces fitted here, his hurdle mark is much lower than it is chasing, but may be in good order over hurdles coming off his recent win. Horse who can do well in form but I prefer CourtnCatcher has been running well at past this trip, and so dropping back at Galway may work out well for an in form horse. Took him while to get off the mark but looks good now and handles any ground and that is pretty encouraging. Six Stone Ned is also another good pick hes knocking on door with good recent form. Now back hurdling he can take advantage if as good as he was chasing.
Define looked a bit better on his last run, but hes on a long barren run without a win and it would be pretty huge if he then broke it here at Galway. Other recent form aside has been far from encouraging. Lady of Glencoe is coming good but it has been on much quicker ground than he gets today and the recent flat run looks pretty poor, fact is plenty improving needed.
Usuel Smurfer 13/2, Your Busy 12/1, Ahorsecalledmolly 10/1,
Now we get a 3mile handicap hurdle, a seriously testing trip around galway, weight is more of a factor than over the shorter trips. Blackwell Synergy is not the prefect jumper over fences and his hurdling is far from prefect too, hes up in the ratings for his good showings and others may be more progressive. Prosperity Square has had a long time away rom the track and came back from his sole run since pretty well but a lot more to do for the win here. Tico a 2nd last time doesn’t look like he can take the 3lb rise he must carry again as first time blinkers had positive first affect.
Happy New Year rattled off a hat trick not so long ago but the chasing form went poor and they are now hoping that hurdles can help him find his feet once again. Landero had a wonderful win last time but on quick ground, he wasn’t so strong in his Galway run back in October which was an effort that wouldn’t win this especially with the 12lb raise. Victrix Gale is a real stayer and that may well come into it but his previous Galway run wasn’t that great and he is a bit hit and miss.
With this race looking tricky I am going stay with the 3 options I have left. Small bets at that to see how we go. Usuel Smurfer has a Bellewstown second coming into this, after his win at downpatrick too so Galway should suit him, in fine vain of form and in top 2 on more than half his runs to boot. Your Busy offers a bigger price. He also had a Bellewstown second coming into this as well as an impressive win at Killarney on his last run, he still is below his chasing mark so can’t say handicapper has him yet. Ahorsecalledmolly just about got in at the weights so over 3miles thats a benefit for me here. Another one with a Bellewstown second last time out much improved on his poor roscommon run. Was cracking horse back in 2011 if retaining that ability should run well.
Darwins Fox 11/1 , Owega Star 11/1
Both Unions Dues and Alkali are from the Weld Stable so they top the market in this rather poor 1 mile and 4 furlong maiden and not one I will focus on for too long. Their both good horses no doubt but going go with a bit of value in this race. Darwins Fox is running for an form stable right now and his racing style might suit here, he was a bumper and hurdle winner so no reason he can’t win on the flat too. Owega Star takes my interest now giving the flat a go, they testing conditions may suit him as he is likely too stay this trip and yard like him alot judging by money for him at clonmel despite poor run.
Muirhead 20/1 , Carlingford Lough 6/1,
A good race in the Galway Plate with 2m 6f over the fences at Ballybrit, a large field but an interesting race. Bobowen is an english raider coming off one of his best runs,, but with so many with better terms at the weights, this trip on soft may stretch him. Majestic Concorde is a great horse on flat and over hurdles, but im not sure he makes a great chaser and its been a while for him too. After a good run Pride of the Artic has tailed off and this is a hard test in that sort of form. Jamsie Hall goes off a career high here and would take an imporvement to overcome that.
Carlingford lough will surely get in as a Mcmanus handicap job here once a non runner is declared. His Galway record is very impressive with two wins and two 2nds. Klepht went well in April and likes soft ground, flat spin didn’t show much may like the softer ground. Buckers Bridge likes it bottomless which might not just happen for him here and hes got bit weight to contend with too. Romanseco is very interesting on his Kim Muir 3rd but he also can be sketchy with some of his jumping for one who likes staying on. Supreme Doc has been consistent but did not stay on last run and really should have had a win by now if that good.
Should Carlingford Lough not get in Muirhead is the one to watch a past course winner. Ran good races in two big races this season, had hurdle spin to get right for this and 6lbs lower than mark that got 6th in this last year.
The Alarm Clock 9/1 , Antiquus 9/1
Daliyan had good win 3 runs back, went up weights for it and not as good 2 runs since to suggest has a Galway win in him. Not fan of Gold Falcon on his total bomb on last run and high enough at weights. Rock Band is ex hannon but not showing enough really to take a race of this level. The black devil likes to front run but with so many behind that may play against him as hes unlikely to steal a march. Toufan Express is a mixed horse I had followed many years ago, he did finally get a Galway win but hes not getting any younger to repeat.
The Alarm Clock will cope with slower ground, he had a good second at bellewstown coming into this. Also has a solid 3rd from Galway last September as a plus for him. Antiquus is my other pick off a nice weight he seems be ok on this course with a 4th and 5th his last two runs here. Handles soft connections also interested in having galway winner.
The Topaz Mile for handicappers and anyones race at 6/1 the field.
Lucky Kitten 5/2
Somehow this mile handicap only ends up with 4 entries so is much easier to break down. Capitol Hill might not like too much of the rain which has fallen, and the blinkers will need to have quiet the effect on him. Indian Icon is following the same route Our Conor took which was interestingly pointed out. But the value lies in Welds Lucky Kitten with this open enough on the form book cases can be made for each in different ways. 3lbs on avourite and hope blinkers can continue their good effect.
