Horse Racing – Ballybrit Galway Festival 2013 – Day 4 Picks and Tips 1st August 2013

 Galway Day 4

Much better from Day 3 with main bet on the mcmanus handicap good thing and a winner in the second last two before the gamble.

Golden Wonder 7/1

A 2mile 6 furlong beginners chase to get day 4 at galway under way.  Heaney did alright for himself hurdling but still left a little to be desired when chasing so far and while he did run some good races at hurdles last chase run did not seem to show his progress. I’m Cool Too put on his best run last time just going down to Stonemaster but has mixed form and threw in bad run before that. Minella for Value was well regarded making the trip to Cheltenham in October, recent runs are not nothing to write home about and better options in this field. Raajih interesting but has bit ground to make up on others here on form book to suggest hes more than a place chance.

Ballyfinboy started proving he is much more useful as a chaser than hurdler, but it took quick ground to do so. Galway will be soft and a test and thats a slight worry. His Navan win did come at around this trip thou on soft ground and so perhaps staying test will suit. Golden Wonder is interesting this is just his first chase run coming off an impressive hurdle win at Bellewstown. Trainer comments suggest they think he will make a much better chaser now and that interests me. Shake the Bucket won’t have liked the conditions getting softer his best runs came on quick ground, and did plenty running on all weather which shows as much. Spring Heeled has run in some much harder chase contests than this and done so with credit. He front ran in a good show so more conservative tactics could see him at best for staying the Galway hill. He is pretty short in market however so value lies in Golden Wonder.

Rebel Fitz 4/6

A Novice Chase over  2m and a furlong a true test of this young newbie chasers. Both changing the Guard and Sizing Italy will be decent chasers but they have run into a strong sort in Rebel Fitz here who also has a course win to his name. Has been jumping pretty well and best show last time out, drop in trip no issue you would feel here at Galway. A good sort who looks a few lbs ahead of his rivals here.

Ted Dolly 11/2

Another mile handicap at Galway and surprising that their hasn’t been a bigger entry.. Taking on Maundy Money on the hat trick bid. Parkers Mill stepped up last two runs and didn’t take to it he drops back here but must also contend with top weight but also the galway hill. But his wins came at tipperary a different test to this. Cheval Rouge opened with two seconds that would have her right here, but the last two runs have been very uninspiring for a horse carrying the 2nd from top weight. Measure Approval has been pretty awful this season but turned things around with last run but not always reliable to repeat that effort.

Ted Dolly gets off a nice weight here with a good spin over the jumps with a 3rd here on monday. Was 3rd in this 2 years ago so showing a liking for getting up the hill and worth considering at lower end of the weights.

Yellow Rosebud 5/4, Sendmylovetorose (saver)  11/2

A 7 furlong fillies stakes and it should be interesting. With ground on soft side a liking for ground on the soft side is what the likely winner will be wanting. Yellow Rosebud seemed to be getting the better of his rival  Lady Wingshot now a non runner who he was 2nd to in this last year. Hanky Panky had a nice win this season but has been heavily raced and form has tailed off as such does handle cut but likes come from bit off pace so needs a little luck too. Liberating is knocking on the door with recent runs but form is best on drying ground that won’t get here.

Its hard to oppose Yellow Rosebud, but if you must the second in market Sendmylovetorose is worth a watch.  All best runs have been on testing ground so will like the cut. Has been off track a little while so only saver bet for me.

Our man Zebo 2/1 , Nevskij 20/1

A 2 mile 4 furlong novice hurdle that will likely see some very cut up ground by time they get racing. Aranhill Chief will need to show improvement again but this worsening ground is very much against the form she has being on the better ground. With the ground levelling it a little the talented Bally Longford is rated to win this but Our man Zebo has a lot to like about him including a liking for cut in the ground, managed edge lady of glencoe out on quick ground shows his level. adding of tongue tie could also bring out bit more. For a long shot look no further than Nevskij a mud lark, been hunting so stepping up to hurdle here but should really stay in these conditions.

Drive Time 16/1 ,Pique Sous 10/1,

The Feature Galway Hurdle and a serious prize up for grabs over the 2miles for handicappers but it will be a real test with the rain coming down. Rock Critic is from the Weld yard and must overcome a long break as well as a far from lenient mark too. Has track and ground form though so hard to totally discount. Martin has his horse in fine form but maybe the talk of Ted Veale handling this ground and putting Pique Sous away on flat has built him up a bit too much. With 7lbs in hand on Ted Veale pique sous comes into play as he seems to finish well up a hill on the form book.

Stiffer task on the cards for Rawnaq here moving up weights, ran well on soft but preference likely for quicker ground. Thomas Edison is been talked up bit as the McCoy pick here and that he can progress but nothing hes done really compares to a host of the horses in this field. I cant leave Drive Time out at the price, the decision to opt for Pique Sous can not have been easy, Drive Time handles all the grounds has a very good strike rate over hurdles, fell in last years race won by talented Rebel Fitz when 4/1 so chance to redeem here. Misunited was the last I left out some nice pieces of form and from good yard but I am going go with the Ruby moun Pique Sous, who should be ok with cut in the ground here, a nice weight and a lovely hurdler. FInished well at Bellewstown and Cheltenham so Galway not an issue.

Dusty Trail 7/1

Less of an interest for me in these final two races, this one a 1m 4f handicap will be a true test with the ground and trip. I have picked out two horses who will take too this ground and have some good form in the book.
