3:15pm Goodwood – AMAZING MARIA (NAP)
Three year olds have historically dominated this race and since 1988 they have won 19 of the 25 runnings. This is well above the spread for runners with 19 wins from 128 runners for three years olds and just 6 wins from 78 runners for four years and older horses.
Venus De Milo has only dropped 2lbs on the official ratings since her second in the Irish Oaks but in my eyes her form this season isn’t really as good and I think she’s been running a few lbs lower than 112. I’m also not convinced that, Narniyn, who stays 10 furlongs over soft ground on galloping tracks in France will be suited by this speedier test so I’m going to pass her over too.
Amazing Maria was taking a large step into the unknown when trying 12f in the Oaks as she had previously only contestet at 6f & 7f. Additionally coming off a break since last August she would have need the run somewhat. She didn’t stay and it’s no surprise to see her drop back down to a more realistic distance. She’s already won twice at this track so we’ve no worries about her handling it and I think she can step up to beat this field here.
3:50pm Goodwood – CLEAR SPRING (e/w)
A tricky race on the face of it but a quick look in the form book highlight’s the consistency of Clear Spring when encountering today’s conditions of 6 furlongs ran on good or faster ground with figures of 1110031124132410 (7 wins & 4 places from 16 runs). The draw has been kind with only Bear Behind on that side able to be classed as a front runner. That should enable him to get a handy tow in to the race without being hassled too much for the position and talented claimer Cam Hardie takes a handy 5lbs off to aid him. Conditions look ideal and at the current prices he looks far too big to be left alone here.
