Horse Racing: Dermot Weld’s Galway Festival – Tips and Trends

Widely acknowledged as his target for the season, Dermot Weld has an impeccable record at this track with 100 wins from 412 runners. I’m going to take an analytical look at his previous runners to see if we can spot any patterns or angles for this years Galway Festival.

As we can see, blindly backing Weld’s runners in non-handicaps would have resulted in outright profit. So the next step will be to split these Non-Handicaps down:

With his horses 5yo or older showing red at level stakes I’ll only be looking to back anything 4yo or younger. Similarly 7f, 1m1.5f or 2m are by fair his profitable distances and they’ll be the ones to back in. Finally he doesn’t seem to have a good record in chases so I’ll not be backing any of his fence jumpers.

With those fairly basic stats showing clear bias towards either age, distance or type of race I’m going to propose a 1pt stake for each of the following criteria.

I did yeah, just the treble. BOG has boosted it to 12.50 now, and with his last runner into odds on I’m tempted to green up but am going to risk it.

The first two won at 9/10 and 11/8 SP’s whilst Marty’s Magic got beaten in the final furlong to finished 2nd.

Profit of +3.81 is an ok start.

Tarfasha wins at a paltry 2/5 whilst Pirate Cove came last.

Winner but only at 1/5 SP although that price is miles better than the 1/12 available during the day.

    Profit: +2.61

    6:10pm DONT TELL NO ONE

    Both 3pt WIN

Both win fairly well in the end with Don’t Tell No One taking advantage of an unruly horse in the final furlong. Wins at 1/1 and 11/4 mean +11.25pts for the day

      Bets: 8
      Wins: 6
      SR: 75%
      Profit: +13.51pts
      ROI: 57%

Looked to be travelling well prior to the bend but dropped out pretty tamely

    Profit: +10.51pts
