SBB Columns Bloggers Selections
2013 Scottish Grand National: No outright bet but we did have six different selections which were Big Occasion (2nd at 17.03), Mister Marker (3rd at 57.14) and then four which failed to finish the race which were Monsieur Cadou (17.65), Lively Baron (19.01), Nuts n Bolts (15.96) and Bradley (13.48).
Tips Entry for SBB Bloggers closes at 2.00pm – The outright bet is determined by the runner with the most picks after the cutoff time, if there is no runner with more picks than any other then the race is a No Bet, stakes advised are 1pt per 1 tip clear of the next runner, so one with 3 picks and the next best has 1 pick means a 2pt win on the runner with 3 picks.
Zipster – Mister Marker (1 Picks)
My final shortlist of 4 came down to Aplha Victor, Roalco De Farges, Summery Justice and the trend pick Mister Marker. Summery Justice was quite a surprise to see him as big as 66/1, he was fourth in the Midlands National last month although well off the winner, the ground and trip will be fine and he will enjoy this track.
Mister Marker was third in this race last year and is a dual course winner, ground is in his favour and his mark does not look that bad despite of the 5lb long handicap. Reaclo De Farges was a winner over 3m2f last time out at Newbury and with him also off a 5lb long handicap in theory he is up 13lbs for that win but the ground is perfect for him and he does like going left handed.
Alpha Victor only has a 2lb long handicap to deal with and runner up in the Midlands Grand National with him and the winner Goulanes well ahead of the rest and he is only officially 3lbs higher than that today although I think he would have enjoyed this in the mud.
Tough call this year with Tidal Bay screwing up the weights, I would like to go with Alpha Victor but he can be a character and decide that he does not want to race so I am going to go with the trend pick here as I believe Mister Marker has a great chance on improving on last years result in this race.
Peter – Roalco De Farges (1 Picks)
The Scottish National is usually run at a furious pace due to the easy fences. The tight track means hold up horses often get too far behind to win, so I’ll discard those including Tidal Bay and Mendip Express. I also discarded any horse that ran at Aintree or in a Class 1 race at the Cheltenham festival, as this valuable prize is rarely won as an afterthought. Last year’s winner Godsmejudge came here from Cheltenham, but that was from the less competitive Class 2 four-miler. He will be fancied again today, but has been in poor form this season.
My short list is Roalco de Farges, Alpha Victor and Mister Marker who all ran well in handicap chases last time out, come here relatively fresh on the back of less than 6 runs this season and have proven stamina. I reluctantly pass over Alpha Victor as he’s refused to jump twice in four chase starts, although I think he’s talented and well handicapped. Mister Marker was third last year behind Godsmejudge, but in reality was beaten comfortably and is off a 7lb higher mark today and may have to settle for a place once more.
Roalco de Farges is my pick in the hope that jockey Richard Johnson races him prominently, at least in midfield. This horse had the whole of last season off after a good novice campaign ending with a second to Tidal Bay over 3m5f. He was well worth his official rating of 134 as a novice and today goes off 140, so although up 13lbs (5lbs out of handicap) from his easy win over 3m3f at Newbury last time I think he is up to it.
gghofman – Tidal Bay (1 Picks)
The further the better for this class horse these days. A lovely hurdler and a decent chaser he has really come on of late with his best runs being running on late. Not to be blamed at Aintree last time so should be fresh for this test now and unaffected. Less trouble to avoid here and gets the test he so needs of 4 miles.
jaydubs – Alpha Victor (1 Picks)
There are a few horses stick out here but Alpha Victor gets my vote. A fantastic second in the Midlands National behind Pipe’s Goulanes who was backed on the day as if it couldn’t lose. It pushed it all the way to the line eventually going down by just couple of lengths. That was on good ground but 2 previous wins this season have been on heavy so it looks versatile enough and from just 3lbs above the Midlands national weight. Green Flag is a big danger for me with its 4th behind Ma Fieulle and Holywell who both won well again at Aintree while The Package in 3rd ran a good race in the National before fading. It still looks well handicapped but the extra distance has just erred me to the side of Alpha Victor. Other horses I had on the short list were Midnight Appeal, Lackamon and Sam Winner.
