WC2014 Netherland v Mexico and Costa Rica v Greece

Netherland v Mexico (17.00 GMT)

The Netherlands had no problems with getting out of their group, viagra dosage they started in style with a 5-1 victory over the reigning champions Spain and then went on to beat both Australia and Chile to finish the group with maximum points. Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie are both sitting on 3 goals whilst Memphis Depay also has 2 to his name.

Mexico finished runner up behind the hosts in their group having finished level with Brazil on 7 points, they beat both Croatia and Cameroon with a 0-0 draw against the hosts. They only managed 4 goals in the group stages but at the same time only conceded 1 goal and Guillermo Ochoa is currently ranked number 2 in the goalkeeping charts (Castrol Index).

Our Thoughts:

These two have not met too often, just four games since 1998 and the upper hand goes to the Netherland who are unbeaten in those four matches however only one of those was a competitive match and that was when they met in the World Cup back in 98 when the match finished 2-2 thanks to two goals in the last 15 minutes from the Mexicans. The Netherlands came through their group in fine form by winning all three matches which included a 5-1 win over the current champions Spain, scoring plenty yet only conceded on average a goal a match.

Mexico finished behind Brazil in their group, on the same points but were beaten on goal difference. Like Brazil they beat both Croatia and Cameroon and picked up a 0-0 draw with the hosts. Mexico are a team that usually gets out of the group stages, the past five WC that they have appeared in they have done so but they have also gone out in the 1st KO round!

The Mexicans struggle to progress in the WC, from 14 appearances they have only made it past the first KO round twice and they went on to reach the quarter finals in both of those, for me the Dutch are flying and Mexico are not exactly scoring plenty at the moment so its a Dutch win for me.

Netherlands to win at 2.15 (Boylesports)

Mexico will keep this very tight and Netherlands might struggle early on to get a good foot hold in the game but they should ultimately have that bit of class from the likes of Van Persie or Robben to find a winning goal.

It will be tight but 1-0 could be a good shout.

Another game I expected having gone with these to qualify – this looks likely to be a decent game. Holland always flatter to deceive and to be fair, should have collected a WC win in their history as they often look potential winners but fall at the final hurdle. They often shoot themselves in the foot with internal wrangling but perhaps this time they will let their football do the talking

Mexico are dark horses as predicted pre-tourney; they are good on their own soil but don’t usually travel well so they are performing above par currently – they know how to make life difficult so expect a repeat of the Brazil game tactics and thus the Dutch really need to score to make this game open up

Holland do have the players to do just that and they may need a bit of magic from one of their star forward players – Mexico can also produce some great stuff at times so it would be foolish to discount them

Not a match I can confidently call as any result is possible in fairly equal measures – it could be a surprisingly good game and a 2-2 draw or so or it could be a dire match and goalless. I might dabble on 2-2 (15.0) and 3-2 Holland (40 on BF or 34.0) but the most sensible bet here would be a draw at 3.4 or so as I can’t see either team dominating unless the Dutch really click into top gear

Costa Rica v Greece (21.00 GMT)

Costa Rica have been the surprise team of the World Cup thus far, who would have thought in a group containing England, Italy and Uruguay that they would finish top of the group and unbeaten! On top of that they only conceded a single goal and that has results in both Keylor Navas (GK) and Oscar Duarte (DEF) being ranked in the top 5 for their positions (Castrol Index).

How Greece have come out of the group stages is something quite amazing, this is because they only scored 2 goals in the group stages, they didn’t score in the first two matches which resulted in a single point but a 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast in the final group match was enough to send them through but it was close because they did not score the winner till the 93rd minute when Georgios Samaras converted a penalty.

Our Thoughts:

This is probably the most open game of the first KO round, Costa Rica have stunned a lot of people by winning a group which included England, Uruguay and Italy and they will be on a high and looking to set a new record for progress in the WC, the made the last 16 back in 1990 but have never gone past this round before. This is only Greece’s third appearance in the WC finals and and the first time they have made it out of the group stage although some may wonder how they have done it by only scoring 2 goals!

This could end up anything! I think Costa Rica have shown enough to convince me that they can beat a goal shy Greece but I also think Greece will score so I am going with a Costa Rica 2-1 win at 12.00(Various).

Costa Rica have been very surprising in topping Group D ahead of Uruguay, Italy and England but they have fully deserved it and play a Greece team who’ve scraped through an unbelievably poor group. Costa Rica will present a challenge much similar to Colombia for Greece and they couldn’t handle the Columbians at all. An aging Greece team who are still relying on gathering the solidity they managed when winning Euro 2004 shouldn’t find the energy or that touch of brilliance to win this game.

Costa Rica qualified well by winning impressively against Uruguay and following that up with a good win over Italy and drawing against a poor England side. Greece snuck through having started very badly losing 3-0 but then recovering to grab 4 pts and seal their passage with the latest of qualifying goals.

So the form looks to point to a Costa Rica win but again, I’m not so sure – I tipped Greece to qualify pre-tourney so am pleased with their progress but I still think they could sneak through here; their usal MO of being defensively strong and maybe nicking a goal will probably surface and it’s whether the impressive and occasionally adventurous C/Ricans can break them down for me. This could be another tight one and possibly penalties will be needed again. The pressure could mean both sit tight and look to counter which points towards a tight dour game

Betting wise, it looks a logical one goal margin win perhaps to CR but I might look at the 0-0 here as that seems more likely to me, with pens being the method of progress as ET could just be a case of two teams not wanting to take chances at all

Draw is 3.1 best , with 0-0 being a 6.5 shot – To win on pens is 9.2 for both teams (sportingbet) so I might dutch that as it gives a decent return

About Author

I have been in the betting game for getting on 10 years now, I was a late comer in the betting scene, never really showed much interest in the first 20 years of my life but then I came across a betting website and that all changed. I have learnt a vast amount over the last 5 years, I used to believe I could pick the winner in every race before I realised I could not and began selective betting which is the only way forward. I mainly stick with the horses but do occasionally stray off to bet on the footie or speedway. I am now 35 years old, born and bred in Ipswich and still here and forever a Tractorboy, work part time for a Cash & Carry and have a dog named Dave! That’s about it from me.
